You’ve heard it from your parents or said it to your children more time then you can count…fasten your seatbelts. Investing is no different! A recent article (See the Hartford Funds “Fasten Your Seatbelts” article from September 2022, Fasten Your Seatbelts (hartfordfunds.com) reminds us that volatility is an ever-present occurrence when choosing to invest your money. Depending on your personality, this analogy might make you a bit nervous at first! However, with the exception of the current market correction, over the past 50 years, of the 29 previous corrections of at least 10% all have been completely erased by a bull market. What does that mean? Owning stocks and bonds has always required riding out the ups and downs.
The best thing to do is to develop a plan, stick with it, and resist the urge to panic. Successful investing is about being patient, disciplined and not letting the fear of market volatility alarm you.
